WANTED: In the New West
“The New West resonates with me because life is always evolving, just like the west. Artwork should reflect that change too… I think the history of art always informs what we do going forward but as a creator, you should be striving to add something new to the conversation.”- Ben Steele
While grounded in classical realism, Ben Steele’s work pushes into more imaginative territory, combining art history references with modern iconography. His paintings carry a cinematic sensibility bridging classical Western subject matter with a fresh perspective and playful humor. “I like to take iconic imagery and put it in a different context or blend the very familiar with the lesser known. To me, that variety encapsulates the limitless possibilities of life, and more especially, life here in the West.”, the artist says. Steele enjoys exploring a wide range of subjects which keeps things lively for both he and his collectors. This freedom to evolve while staying true to his distinctive style, is what has made him a consistent favorite and leading name in the New West genre.
At the University of Utah, Ben Steele studied under the painter and sculptor David Dornan and continued to apprentice with he and Paul Davis through the Helper Workshops. The small coal and railroad town that served as the setting for his intensive training remains his home today. Steele has been featured in national publications including Fine Art Connoisseur, Western Art and Architecture, American Art Collector and Southwest Art Magazines. His art is held in numerous public and private collections including those of Steve Carell, Dan Patrick, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, Fred Couples, Raymond James, Delta Airlines and the San Francisco Giants.
