Where We Art
“The goal is to give every painting its own unique concept and meaning, yet I always want the body of work to gel together in a harmonious way. If the audience can be pleasantly surprised that all the works came from the same artist, that’s my favorite part.” -Ben Steele
Ben Steele excels in exploring a wide range of subjects while staying true to his style, which combines classical training with contemporary vision. Sometimes thought-provoking and sometimes humorous, his work often prompts lively dialogue. The realism of trompe l’oeil trick the eye, particularly with his popular crayon paintings. Steele paints in conversation with his formal training, allowing him to respond to modern life through the tropes and techniques of Old Masters.
His latest work focuses on iconic landmarks, famous figures and motifs of the West, for which he both pays homage and playfully flips scripts. “Where We Art is about those western locations where my art is both created and viewed, the magnificent surroundings and stories that makeup the history of the west, and hopefully some of the connective power that can exist in the moment between an artwork and a viewer.”, says Steele.
At the University of Utah, Steele studied under the painter and sculptor David Dornan and continued to apprentice with him and Paul Davis through the Helper Workshops. The small coal and railroad town that served as the setting for his intensive training remains his home today. Steel’s work can be found in notable collections including Raymond James Financial Art Collection, Steve Carell, Dan Patrick, Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, Fred Couples, The San Francisco Giants’ executive offices, and Delta Airline Sky Club lounges throughout the US. His work has been featured in Fine Art Connoisseur, American Art Collector and Southwest Art Magazines, as well as the Artbeat Podcast with Kathryn M. Davis.
