Eclectic West

The West, and the desert especially, is a place of solitude. There is nothing but space and it equates to a feeling of being free. And in this place seemingly remote and barren, is actually quite fertile ground, creatively- it is a place where creativity can and does thrive.” -Bradford Overton

Eclectic West is a culmination of ideas and influences that tell a story of the West as varied as the cultures which define it. It also embodies Overton’s own artistic persona. “I thrive on pop culture and the western aesthetic. From hippy culture to motorcycle culture, to cowboys- it all blends together to create my eclectic vision of the West.”, says Overton. “My art is a direct reflection of the things that I surround myself with and the way I live.  I am filtering experiences through my mind’s eye and expressing it visually.”, the artist says.

When creating a new body of work, the paintings come together simultaneously, starting with a collection of imagery, objects, ideas and photographs, then laying the groundwork of materials, drawings and sketches. The next step, according to Overton, is to “turn the music up loud and paint until you can’t see straight.” His studio is one of beautiful chaos, with multiple canvases on the easel surrounded by the objects and art forms that inspire him most. An avid reader and writer of poetry, creativity is second nature, and all mediums seem to intersect. With everything he creates there is a common thread of playfulness; a childlike sense of wonder and curiosity that he explores through his art. It’s often this spark of levity that fosters a connection with the viewer, bringing out their inner child.

Bradford Overton is a Salt Lake City, UT based artist with a prolific career, exhibiting bodies of artwork in multiple mediums for over two decades.
