The Weight of Wonder

“The lead toys in my paintings have been through a lot. They’re much older than me. They’ve survived and arrived in my studio ready to go again. Like old friends I hope haven’t changed they surprise me with their wit and wildness. And together we bear the weight of wonder.”  - Bradford Overton

Often Bradford Overton’s paintings start with a dream. He awakes, easing into the day, focusing his thoughts with writing, sketching and often, a good laugh.  Then he begins to create- cutting paper, taking pictures, whatever helps him shape his dream into a tangible image. “The distance between what I finally paint and what I imagined I would paint is how I gauge the success of the effort. Sometimes I’m surprised by what emerges but most often I’m delighted. It’s like seeing some wonderful friend you just picked up at the airport who you hope hasn’t changed. And there they are.”, the artist says.

Overton interprets the ‘weight of wonder’ as faithfully bringing life to dreams and ideas through the language of art. His most recent paintings represent his love of the process of discovery in his art, which is what keeps him coming back to painting again and again over the course of his career. Painting, for Overton, is a deep calling that is omnipresent in every aspect of life.
