In Good Company brings two incredible Utah artists together in a new exhibition that highlights what they each do best. Utah has become one of the most interesting incubators for contemporary artists in the West. The universities in the region have built an unusually strong culture around studio art, one where accomplished, working artists are also deeply invested in teaching and encouraging the next generation. Douglas Fryer and David Dornan are important leaders within that tradition. Their styles are distinct: Doug reduces the landscape toward atmosphere, memory and abstraction, while David builds incredibly layered worlds where objects, imagery and the physical act of painting collide. Yet both demonstrate the same seriousness about craft, experimentation and cultivating an individual voice. This exhibition is an opportunity to celebrate two exceptional painters, while speaking to the larger culture they have helped create and the community of artists they have influenced.
David Dornan is a painter of profound visual rigor whose work transforms everyday objects such as brushes, paint tubes, cans, flowers into compelling explorations of color, form, and light. Rather than arranging still-life subjects from the natural world, Dornan is an award-winning artist who has exhibited nationally for over twenty years. His artwork exists in public and private collections throughout the United States. With an MFA from Arizona State University, he resigned a seventeen-year university faculty position to pursue his painting career full time. Dornan currently resides in Helper, Utah where he continues to mentor emerging and established artists alike through a renowned, long- running intensive workshop known as Helper Art Workshops, which have played a crucial role in shaping the town’s identity as a cultural and artistic hub.
Douglas Fryer is regarded for his richly textured, subtly abstracted landscapes. Using a variety of tools, techniques and media, he creates poetic works that inspire contemplation and reflection. Interested in work that explores the interplay between the physical and metaphysical, Fryer has been influenced by artists such as Soren Emil Carlsen, John Twachtman, George Inness, Edgar Degas, Fred Cuming, V. Douglas Snow and Alex Kanevsky, among many others. He hopes that those who view his paintings will sense his love for his subjects and his pleasure in working with his materials. Fryer was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was raised in the northern suburbs of Chicago, Illinois as well as in California. He received a BFA (1988) and MFA (1995) from Brigham Young University, principally studying with Bruce Hixon Smith. Fryer has taught at BYU, University of Hartford, Fashion Institute of Technology, and Snow College. His work is held in numerous private and public collections. Fryer currently lives with his family in Spring City, Utah.
