Explorations in Color
“When I paint animals, I try to paint them with the character of the animal, but individual enough to capture a mood or emotion. It's my aim to have their spirit reach out to the viewer and interact.” -David Frederick Riley
David Frederick Riley is celebrated for his unique talent in capturing the majesty of wildlife and the natural world. Riley’s new exhibition focuses on color, which is a departure from his typical monochromatic palette. “I always love painting in neutral tones and feel they can create a soothing, ethereal effect. It was fun with this mix of work to balance that with the high vibration of color, which to me creates a lot of excitement and energy to the painting. I gave myself a lot of freedom to explore. I really let go with saturation and different combinations of color harmonies to create mood, emotion and atmosphere”, the artist says. The emotion that his subjects convey captivate; his animal portraits hold the viewers gaze and create an instant connection. The artist aims to remind his viewers of the wonder of nature- and to be inspired by the ways in which our co-existence enriches our lives.
Riley has a BFA and MFA in Fine Art from the Savannah College of Art and Design, where he was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award. After a ten-year career in illustration and teaching for Colorado Mesa University, he and his family now reside in Utah, where he teaches and paints. His work has appeared in Western Art and Architecture Magazine, Western Art Collector and Southwest Art Magazine. Riley was recently a finalist in the Art Renewal Center's Annual Salon, Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition, and was in the top 100 finalists in London's BP Portrait Award.
