“This new series of paintings is portrait based and my aim is to capture a deep essence of each being. Their gazes follow you around the room, engaging you as much as you engage them, connecting from some ethereal plain or from another time. As we observe them in their place in A Western Story, our interaction might help us find our own.” -David Frederick Riley
A Western Story
A Western Story captures impressions of the wild and free spirit of Wyoming and the broader West. It is a collection of unique and individualistic characters that come together to tell part of the story of the people and wildlife from the region.
David Frederick Riley’s paintings are inspired by the universal narratives of the human condition and emotion. Riley works primarily in oil, contrasting contemporary color fields and abstract space with traditional handling of the human form. He uses color harmonies to showcase emotion and the vibrancy of life. His work frequently illustrates themes of emotional and spiritual growth.
Riley has a BFA and MFA in Fine Art from the Savannah College of Art and Design, where he was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award. After a ten-year career in illustration and teaching for Colorado Mesa University, he and his family now live in Utah, where he teaches and paints. Riley is the owner and primary instructor at Open Air Art Space. His work has appeared in Western Art and Architecture Magazine, Western Art Collector and Southwest Art Magazine. Riley was recently a finalist in the Art Renewal Center's Annual Salon, Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition, and was in the top 100 finalists in London's BP Portrait Award.
