Westward Glance
"After moving to the West over a decade ago, I have become captivated by the landscape, animals and history that abound here. My artwork is how I engage with this awe-inspiring land. My aim is to capture some of the West's spirit, strength and grace to share with others." -David Frederick Riley
David Frederick Riley’s latest body of work is a celebration of the West and the distinctive wildlife and cultural icons that are synonymous with the region. “Jackson Hole’s wildlife and rich history of western art are unparalleled. Inspiration comes easy here and I am proud and honored just to be a part of it. This artwork reflects my love of the West and the wildlife that lives here.”, says Riley.
Known for his emotionally expressive portraits that transfix viewers with their soulful gaze Riley translates his technical mastery of portraiture into minimal compositions. His work bridges aesthetic modes: traditional and contemporary, wildlife and figurative. “I am continuing to explore colors and mark making and new ways of representing the beauty that surrounds me and reflects the history of this region.”, the artist says.
Riley has a BFA and MFA in Fine Art from the Savannah College of Art and Design. After a ten-year career in illustration and teaching for Colorado Mesa University, he and his family now reside in Utah, where the surrounding landscape and abundant wildlife inspire his work. His art has appeared in Western Art and Architecture, Western Art Collector and Southwest Art Magazines.
