Into the Majestic West
“Every time I travel through the vast mountain west, the area between the Cascades and Sierras to the Rockies, I enjoy and discover many new things. The Grand Tetons and Yellowstone are so rich with iconic scenery, wildlife, thermal phenomena and, of course, clouds. I have taken thousands of cloud photographs over the years from this region that inspire me. No two are the same.” -Dennis Ziemienski
Dennis Ziemienski has always been inspired by the vastness of the Western landscape and the rich history of the people and animals that inhabit it. Growing up in the West and traveling extensively in mountain regions and National Parks, he captures the moments that we collectively see as quintessentially Western. His new works immediately command space, whether it’s the sweeping sky over a band of mustangs, the towering presence of a lone buffalo, or the quiet intimacy of two riders paused in the landscape. Working at a large scale, they command space literally as well as emotionally. “I like showing stories. It's up to the viewer to tell the story.”, the artist says. His new works intensify the narrative, going beyond depicting a subject, transforming it into something immersive and cinematic.
Known for his dramatic skies, Ziemienski’s stunning clouds can’t help but take center stage. Shifting from luminous and atmospheric to bold and almost architectural, they are the emotional driver of the composition, shaping the way we experience the land and the figures within it. That balance between monumentality and nuance is what makes the works so compelling.
Dennis Ziemienski was born in San Francisco, CA and graduated cum laude from the California College of Arts & Crafts in 1972. He is an award-winning artist and internationally known painter, illustrator and designer. Ziemienski has work in the permanent collections of the Tucson Art Museum, Bakersfield Museum of Art, The Hilbert Art Museum at Chapman University, The Booth Western Art Museum, and the Scottsdale’s Museum of the West.
