Under the Western Skies
“I was born and raised in the west and will forever be enthralled by its history and beauty. I have traveled extensively and taken photos that inspire me and give me ideas on subjects to paint for many years to come.” -Dennis Ziemienski
In the studio, Ziemienski draws on his time as a successful illustrator to guide his process. “Composition and subject matter are key. I start an image by compiling my reference and adjusting the elements to work in the manner I imagine. I draw several layouts, pick the strongest one, transfer it to a toned canvas and start painting.” For this new body of work, he spent a good deal of time researching the native tribes in Yellowstone, particularly the Nez Perce tribe. The Nez Perce referred to the area as “The Creators Unfinished Land”, which Ziemienski thought to be a beautiful and insightful way to describe the exciting and actively changing landscape. The energy and excitement that he experiences during his annual visits to Yellowstone inspire him to capture the feelings on canvas. In Under the Western Skies the artist jokes, “my head was literally in the clouds! In each piece, the viewer is compelled to look upward.”
Dennis Ziemienski was born in San Francisco, CA and graduated cum laude from the California College of Arts & Crafts in 1972. “Growing up in California and taking car trips with my family allowed me to see a lot of this classic imagery. By the ‘60’s and ‘70’s, I noticed much of it was starting to fade away. All the things I witnessed then started to make me think that someday I would like to record those things. So now I am.”, says the artist. Ziemienski has work in the permanent collection of the Tucson Art Museum, Bakersfield Museum of Art, The Booth Western Art Museum and the Scottsdale’s Museum of the West, among others.
