DEFINITELY MAYBE: Timorous Credence from the Lost Trail to Nowhere

“Color selection is very impulsive for me.  It’s way more about pursuing a feeling than how things should look.  I get color hints throughout my process, and I do have strong feelings and assign very specific meanings and/or power to each color, but usually I don’t know until I know.  Then one color leads to the next, and so on.”, says Beardsley.

Duke Beardsley's work blends modern artistic elements with the traditional icons of the West. His latest works are led by his intuitive approach to color, new explorations in design and the influences of his everyday life that reveal themselves through the paintings when they are ready. His work invites viewers to think about the cowboy genre in a new way, making him a consistent favorite among collectors of contemporary western art.

As a sixth generation Coloradan, Beardsley has been painting cowboys all his life. When asked what makes the genre’s appeal so enduring, he admits it’s tough to pinpoint. “I could offer something trite or cliche… championing the West as STILL the land of opportunity, just as it was seen to be in the halcyon ‘Go West Young Man!’ days of the early 19th century. Or I could pay homage to the ‘true pioneer spirit’ that arguably still exists today. I could point to the obvious beauty and splendor of the region:the breath-taking beauty and majesty of the geology, the vast sun-washed and shadow-cast vistas, oceans of sage and painted rock laid out at the feet of snow-capped peaks. Or perhaps it’s the simple but beloved image of the American Cowboy itself… a lone man on a horse, carving his living out from the harshest and most unforgiving wilderness Mother Nature ever threw against the wall. Or at least that’s the story we tell ourselves. Hard to top that!”, the artist says.
