Off Track Appositions: Far Riding Commixtions from Way Out West

Maeve is thoughtful and analytical in her approaches to the medium and her subjects. But she is also whimsical, impulsive and spontaneous. That’s a very tricky mix- I’d say an essential mix for an artist- and she nails it!” – Duke Beardsley

The playfulness of expression in his figures and the coloring in his work is what excites me most about Duke’s art. His canvases come alive with vibrating edges and detail, without overworking.” – Maeve Eichelberger

Altamira Fine Art in Jackson Hole presents a buzzing dual exhibition combining two artists who are leading examples of the New West genre. Maeve Eichelberger and Duke Beardsley connected through mutual friends and collectors in the Denver art scene and clicked. They each recognized a special quality in one another's work and creative mindset. “So much about Maeve and her work is exciting to me. She is smart, curious, inventive and talented. She’s also vulnerable, thoughtful and careful. A great combination! And she’s lived an authentic western life. Most of all, she is determined to be original.”, Duke says. Originality defines both artists, as does a commitment to carrying forward the western art tradition while eschewing anything too romanticized.

Both Duke and Maeve’s deep Colorado roots lend an authenticity to their work, while their notably modern approaches and styles make it feel anything but traditional. Duke’s pop art sensibility and distinct color pairings make him a consistent favorite among collectors- his paintings often feeling at home in non-western spaces and collections. Maeve’s use of saddles as her ‘canvas’ are thoughtfully rendered and possess more than meets the eye. “Saddles have such rich history, personal preferences vary wildly, plus they have the coolest abstract form. Multiple layers and functions allow me to express more.”, Maeve says. Similarly, Duke’s mixed media pieces reveal multiple layers of technique and effort, to achieve the result. “Every piece I do starts as a charcoal drawing. Then the under-painting is done in acrylic, usually as a grayscale value exercise, then all the color is done in oil. Add in the occasional collage, varied texture, blood, sweat, tears and dog hair and voila! Mixed media. “, Duke explains.

Off Track Appositions features both 2-D and 3-D works that delight in vivid and electric color as well as monochrome palettes. Pattern, gesture and expressive line- work abound, creating a visual synthesis throughout the exhibition. While drawing from a similar language, their individual voices are boldly unique.

Duke Beardsley was born in Denver, Colorado and studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.  His work has been featured in notable exhibitions across the country such as the Coors Western Art Exhibit and Sale, the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale, The Russell: The Sale to Benefit the C.M. Russell Museum, and the Colorado Governor's Invitational Art Show & Sale. Beardsley’s work can be found in noteworthy collections around the world, including the Forbes Collection, Denver Art Museum, Booth Museum of Western Art, and the State of Colorado.

Maeve Eichelberger is a Colorado native, capturing both urban and rural lifestyles in her artwork. Passionate about collage, Maeve specializes in a new form of three-dimensional collage. Using Plexiglas as her material for its modern, durable and transparent qualities, it allows her to explore layers more deeply.  She has exhibited her work nationally and is collected by Museums and private collectors internationally.  Notable collections include the Booth Western Art Museum, Museum of Outdoor Arts, Provost of Regis University and the UMB Bank Corporate Collection.
