Run Plumb Wild: Wanton Disorder from The Lost Trail to Nowhere

“I draw inspiration from so many sources: people, places, animals, ideas but what I find most inspiring right now is finding anyone anywhere who is challenging this genre to be seen and thought about in a different and new way.” – Duke Beardsley

Ever open to surprises in the creation of his works, Duke Beardsley’s latest exhibit spun from one place of inspiration but arrived at a different destination altogether; “Originally, the title and inspiration was the latest in a long line of exploring the delicate balance between chaos and order visually on canvas. I’ve found that this genre is rife for that challenge and the more I push it to be chaotic and loose and undirected, the more it responds to a shift in energy to bring it back together. There’s a lot of freedom in that chaos. But as I painted the show, a much stronger vibe of protection and guardianship took over, I think the world feels like a very tumultuous unsafe place right now to a lot of people and in the face of that, came this very strong vibration of a protective guardian and its energy emanating through the iconography of this work.  All I can do is open myself to that.”, the artist says.

It is hard for Beardsley to pinpoint his favorite part of the process, but when pressed admits it’s the act of painting itself- which is where the most evolution and change happens. Preferring to work from a place of spontaneity and the pure impulse to create, he tries to find balance in the studio, accepting what comes, “I try not to be too covetous or critical of any of it, I just do what I do.”

As a sixth generation Coloradan, Beardsley has been painting cowboys all his life. Beardsley’s work has been featured in notable exhibitions across the country such as the Coors Western Art Exhibit and Sale, the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale; The Russell: The Sale to Benefit the C.M. Russell Museum; and the Colorado Governor’s Invitational Art Show & Sale.  His work can be found in noteworthy collections around the world, including: The Forbes Collection; Denver Art Museum; Booth Museum of Western Art, and the State of Colorado.
