AMERICANARAMA

"Images of American streets have always captivated me. American neighborhoods from the 1940s and 50s have a dreamlike quality at once mesmerizing and heartbreaking. Can I reach back through the film negative and touch just one small part of it? Can I feel any of it as I render the quintessential 1950’s girl smile?"  -Geoffrey Gersten

As a creator Gersten is not one to become complacent. He is constantly pushing his own boundaries, driven by instinct to evolve his style. “I can't stay static,” he says. Once he had mastered black and white hyper-realism, he began incorporating color elements into the artworks. A signature motif combines realistically rendered figures superimposed against a backdrop of brightly colored polka dots, a juxtaposition that creates a link between truth and fantasy.  “I paint very realistically,” he says. "I needed to break it up and smash the boundaries of that genre. This is my way of doing that."

Gersten has caught the attention of a public enamored by retro romanticism. His subject matter is a culmination of memories from childhood, Western iconography, film and elements of art history and pop culture. In his compositions, Hollywood vignettes read as accessible and vice versa; mundane moments convey glamour.

This new work builds on his ongoing conceptual hypothesis that art functions as a bridge between the individual and the ideal, the lens through which everyday moments take on the scale and the significance of the iconic. By his brush, subtle acts become symbolic of greater truths, a gesture akin to love writ large on silver screens.
