Matchmaker
Geoffrey Gersten’s Matchmaker is a continuation of the artists deep exploration of the visual narrative of Americana. With masterful paint handling and a vibrant palette, Gersten elevates everyday ephemera such as matchbooks, vintage comic books and puzzles into larger-than-life compositions that are a powerful confluence of nostalgia, design and western identity.
Having amassed a trove of around 10,000 vintage matchbooks, Gersten finds both the hunt and the collection endlessly thrilling. “It has truly taken on a life of its own. Now I am compelled to continue the legacy and protect these objects because it’s become something more than just a handful of trinkets.”, Gersten says.
While the idea has been percolating for a decade, only recently has Geoffrey begun to focus on the sculptural, custom-shaped canvases that have quickly become a hallmark. The delightfully deceptive pieces possess a level of detail that speak to his laser sharp focus and playful wit. “There’s something about the prescribed delineation of a ‘painting’ that becomes truncated by the practicalities of the usual rectangular canvas shape. “I like the idea of ripping an object right out of the painting and making it float in front of your eyes. It feels like a hat trick from my traveling magic show.”, says the artist. Gersten has become so skilled in these illusions that it’s difficult to not try and peer behind the curtain.
Geoffrey Gersten is an internationally represented artist based in Scottsdale, Arizona. After early success as a CAD designer for Honeywell and Boeing, he began painting professionally in 2007. A self-taught artist, his signature style developed from the confluence of abstract expressionism and photorealism and explores themes of personal realization meeting popular culture. Gersten’s work has been featured in American Art Collector Magazine, Western Art & Architecture, Phoenix Home and Garden and The Aspen Times.
