Heading South
Every year, as the seasons change, the West moves to a different rhythm. The mountain towns grow quiet, the desert comes alive, and the familiar migration south begins. At Altamira Fine Art, that seasonal shift offers an opportunity to bring together two distinct artistic communities through a shared appreciation for the evolving American West.
Heading South marks the beginning of our Scottsdale season with a thoughtfully curated selection of exceptional works from our Jackson Hole gallery. Drawn from a summer of ambitious exhibitions, exciting artistic developments, and remarkable creative energy, the collection offers Scottsdale collectors a fresh opportunity to discover some of the most compelling work from across Altamira’s roster.
Though separated by more than a thousand miles, Jackson Hole and Scottsdale share a cultural connection rooted in the landscapes, history, and mythology of the American West. Yet each location brings its own perspective. Jackson’s dramatic mountain environment and enduring frontier identity contrast with Scottsdale’s desert modernism, architectural heritage, and vibrant contemporary art scene. Together, they provide two distinct settings in which to experience the artists reshaping Western art.
The New West is not defined by a single landscape, subject, or artistic tradition. It is a creative movement that draws upon the West’s rich visual history while embracing the broader language of contemporary art. From abstraction and impressionism to pop-inspired imagery, expressive landscapes, and modern interpretations of Western iconography, the artists at Altamira challenge the boundaries of a genre too often confined by its past.
Heading South celebrates that breadth of expression. By bringing works originally presented in Jackson Hole into a new environment, the exhibition invites fresh conversations and unexpected connections. A painting that speaks to the rugged landscapes of Wyoming may find an entirely different resonance beneath the desert light of Arizona. Familiar Western subjects take on new meaning when experienced through a different sense of place.
For collectors, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity to revisit exceptional works from the Jackson Hole season, discover artists they may have missed, and explore the range of contemporary perspectives that define Altamira’s program. More than a change of scenery, Heading South is a celebration of the creative connections between our two galleries and the collectors, artists, and communities that make each season possible. New surroundings. New conversations. A fresh look at the artists moving Western art forward.
We invite you to join us in Scottsdale on November 12th as we welcome the season, reconnect with friends and collectors, and celebrate the ever-evolving art of the American West.
