Altamira Fine Art in Jackson Hole, WY is pleased to present a new exhibition for Howard Post, July 9-23, 2024.
"As much as possible I try to approach my subjects from a fresh point of view. It’s always a challenge for artists not to copy themselves. My favorite part of the process seems to be developing the composition.” -Howard Post
Western Perspectives
Howard Post grew up on a ranch in Southern Arizona, with horses, cattle and corrals being a part of his everyday life. It’s no wonder that these surroundings inspire his ‘ranch life’ subjects today. “It’s like the song Willie Nelson sings, ‘I grew up a-dreamin’ of bein’ a cowboy and lovin’ the cowboy ways…’ I’d have been one too, if it hadn’t been for my third -grade teacher”, says Post. Howard Post’s success in art began young when the teacher submitted one of his drawings to the local newspaper for a competition. The prize to the winner was a yellow toy bulldozer, which the artist still has today.
Post has succeeded in setting himself apart in the western genre, through his impeccable use of color and the unique perspectives within his compositions. He has long been known for his fresh take on subject’s classic to the American West. “I enjoy the abstract qualities I find in many scenes in the western landscape”, Post says. “The other aspect of the process that I enjoy spending time on is building the final paint quality and surface texture.”
Howard Post is a third generation Arizonian, and attended the University of Arizona where he completed his BFA and MFA degrees. In the early 1970’s he worked as a graphic designer and illustrator for clients throughout the US. After serving on the faculty of both University of Arizona and Arizona State University, he began painting full time. In addition, he has participated in rodeo competitions since youth and still ropes competitively today.
Post’s work can be found in a variety of collections including the Smithsonian, The US Postal Service, Scottsdale Museum of the West, The Forbes Foundation, The Eiteljorg Museum, The Denver Art Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, National Cowboy and Heritage Museum and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West to name a few. His work has also been featured in many magazines and books, including Howard Post: Western Perspectives by Rose Frederick Publishing.
