Jivan Lee | Afterglow

To paint the landscape for me is to meet myself new each day, and to bring the challenges and ups and downs of life to the creative process to see what responses might arise. These days I head outdoors because it helps me enter a flow state and from that flow state, creative surprise can develop.” – Jivan Lee

Jivan Lee’s landscapes tell a story that both celebrate and transcend the present moment. Returning time and again to the same locations to become deeply familiar with the terrain is a meditative practice for the artist. “I love the area in which I live, and there is fifteen-year history for me in heading out into the landscape here to paint. But I’m perhaps more inspired by my – our – relationship to landscape more generally than by the specific look of the Southwest or Taos. For me the magic is in what arises anywhere that we feel called to be, or from any moment we feel called to engage”, says the artist.

The title of the show, Afterglow, is both a literal reference to the time of day when the works were created, as well as the metaphorical sense of existing in the liminal space between what we see clearly and what we don’t. “This body of work pushes into new territory for me in terms of image specificity – i.e., how accurately depicted in the illusional picture a work is.  Paint passages are bigger, bolder. Shapes live on in less adorned form. There less fussiness to the work and more play; more respect for the energy and discovery available at the edges between what makes sense visually and what feels powerful,” Lee says.

Jivan Lee grew up in Woodstock, NY, and studied painting and environmental policy at Bard College. His paintings have been the subject of several solo exhibits throughout the West and featured in The Denver Post, The Albuquerque Journal, Fine Art Connoisseur, Western Art & Architecture and American Art Collector Magazines. His work has been shown in museums across the country including the Blumenschein Museum, Taos Art Museum. Millicent Rogers Museum and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art.
