Full Spectrum

I love landscape because it is both the most deeply known aspect of our humanity and is also ever-renewing, always fresh, never the same. I aim to let my work develop out of this quality of sensation; the marks and approach are very much those that I’ve been working on for years, and also there are new things happening with color, dimension, and composition.” – Jivan Lee

Full Spectrum is a celebration of light, and an exploration of what it means to be here in this moment. As an artist who works on site, Jivan Lee is always met with the reality of what nature is offering at that given time- the weather, the feeling, energy, color, light. These circumstances are the jumping off point of what develops on the canvas. This process lends a freshness to each work- as there is no expectation as to the result. It unfolds much as nature unfolds. “I really place value on engaging uncertainty in the process; not really knowing if something is going to work out but allowing that question or sensation to lead me onward, nonetheless. To me this feel like courting a part of our world that I believe art is well-suited to explore and translate; that is, the as-yet-unknown and how it arises out of the familiar.”, Lee says.

Living and working in Taos, New Mexico, Jivan is part of the rich artistic heritage of the region, and over the course of his career has witnessed the ways in which the landscape has grown from a peripheral artistic interest to the near singular focus of his work. Returning time and again to the familiar yet expansive terrain, his understanding and wonder deepens and evolves with each new work. “I’ve been consistently awed by the depth and breadth that has opened up in art making and in what I’ve come to see and feel through relating long-form with the landscape. It’s blown my mind in the best ways.”, says Lee. “I wanted to see how dedicating a body of work to the spectrum of light would feel, and what I might get to learn and share as a result. In this case, the Taos landscape is the scaffolding for the exploration. I’ve been painting sunset light as it stretches across the high plateau or hits the mountains. And I’ve been trying to catch the arc of colors that appear and evolve throughout each day, from sunrise through midday, and then into sundown.” The show aims to leave viewers with a more expansive perspective, and to walk away with the feeling akin to witnessing an incredible sunset or sunrise, full of peace and promise.

Jivan Lee grew up in Woodstock, NY, and studied painting and environmental policy at Bard College. His paintings have been the subject of exhibits throughout the West including at the Blumenschein Museum, Millicent Rogers Museum, Montgomery Museum of Fine Art, Taos Art Museum and Couse-Sharp Historic Site. His work has been featured in The Denver Post, The Albuquerque Journal, Fine Art Connoisseur, Western Art & Architecture, American Art Collector, and Two Coats of Paint among other publications.
