Upwelling
“I continue to go into the landscape I know so well because it continues to speak to me. By getting to delve deeper into the nuance of my medium and my subject, I also get to connect to things that extend far beyond both and connect to all of humanity. It’s a tremendous gift and seems to be a core driver of the meaning I find in this artistic walk.” – Jivan Lee
Living and working in Taos, New Mexico, Jivan Lee is part of the rich artistic heritage of the region, and over the course of his career has witnessed the ways in which the landscape has grown from a peripheral artistic interest to the near singular focus of his work. Returning time and again to the familiar yet expansive terrain, his understanding and wonder deepens and evolves with each new work. “Upwelling is extending some ideas I’ve been unpacking about the illusional space in a work. When paint is used one way, it can communicate depth and sentiment and meaning by way of an image; when it is used another, it can immediately collapse any image-associated illusion down into more primary information: color, texture, movement, gesture. No image, just paint affecting us as paint.”, says Lee. Lately, he has been enjoying pushing both utilizations of his medium to these path's outer edges, simultaneously. “At times this is feeling like the logic of the piece starts hanging on by a thread but still holds. I love that, and this new body of work is made of paintings playing in that domain.”, Lee concludes.
Jivan Lee grew up in Woodstock, NY, and studied painting and environmental policy at Bard College. His paintings have been the subject of exhibits throughout the West including the Blumenschein Museum, Millicent Rogers Museum, Montgomery Museum of Fine Art, Taos Art Museum and Couse-Sharp Historic Site. His work has been featured in The Denver Post, The Albuquerque Journal, Fine Art Connoisseur, Western Art & Architecture, American Art Collector, and Two Coats of Paint among other publications.
