In Front of Where I Am

I’m drawn to the stories of how traditions are passed from generation to generation. There’s a sense the past is present in the West and for me, that arc of time—the traditions, the history, the next generation—are at the heart of the stories I am drawn to and want to share through my work.”  -Maura Allen

In Front of Where I Am features the ranchers, cowboys, cowgirls and Native American people who Maura Allen has met as she travels the American West. “Often, people ask me if the individuals and moments portrayed in my work are historic, from a bygone era. They are real—they are the men, women and children who call the West home and celebrate its heritage through ranching, rodeo and more.”, the artist says.  Allen has been chronicling life in the American West for over thirty years and has amassed an immense collection of black and white images to draw from for reference and inspiration in her work.

Allen works across multiple mediums: painting, printmaking, photography, and most recently, glass.  She blends elements from each discipline, using one to inform the other. An important artistic influence early on was iconic stop action photographer Eadweard Muybridge whose images from the late 1800’s of horses running were a pivotal discovery for the artist. Photography and the American West grew up together, a connection that Allen celebrates. Working on wood panel allows her to add and remove layers to lend a sense of history and age developed in her backgrounds. The patinaed surfaces blend with the bold, modern- day imagery that she has captured while on the road and the result is a visually rich, smooth surfaced window to life in the West.  “Each painting is original and tells a different story. The people and moments I celebrate are real—they are in front of where I am.”, says Allen.

Maura Allen is an award- winning artist whose work is featured in museum, corporate and private collections nationwide. Her paintings and glass were showcased by Double D Ranch, in its top-selling women’s clothing and jewelry collection. She is a fifteen- year participant in the Sigler Western Museum’s annual Cowgirl Up! exhibition. Cowboys & Indians Magazine dubbed Allen “the Warhol of the West.” She serves on the board of trustees of the Sigler Western Museum, and on the board of directors of Leica Society International and photolucida, a global photography collective. Allen lives in Abiquiu, New Mexico.
