New West Rising

In a dynamic group exhibition, three young artists come together to explore the evolution of western art. The New West genre celebrates growth while honoring history- taking the icons, mythology, landscape and visual language of the west and interpreting it through a contemporary lens. “The New West, for me, is the inclusion and romance of the original cowboy ideal. The west survives and will continue to evolve. The new west is open to all who want to incorporate that spirit in one way or another—the one centered around grit and determination. For art, it’s exceptionally rich territory because the storytelling and process offer so much to explore.” Tanden Launder says. Launder meticulously sourced collage material for his new body of work, focusing on the incorporation of place- Wyoming, Yellowstone and the history of Jackson Hole are all highlighted and celebrated side by side in a cohesive collection.

Jacob Lovett spends much of his time traveling throughout the American West documenting the real people and real places where they exist today. He allows scenes to unfold as authentically as possible as he captures them on camera and then returns to his studio to begin the lengthy process of translating these moments in time onto canvas. “The photograph preserves a moment in time and the painting becomes a reflection on that memory.”, the artist says. “I often feel caught between nostalgia and reality. I have a deep appreciation for the traditions, values, and visual language that shaped the American West, but I'm equally interested in the people living that life today. My work isn't an attempt to recreate a romanticized past nor is it solely to document the present. It's an exploration of the space between them.”, Lovett says. His works serve as “western windows”; which are less about preserving the past and more about acknowledging the threshold between what we inherit from the past and where we are headed.

Cyrus Walker’s work blend graphic precision with philosophical depth. His paintings draw on the mythology of the American West and characterized by bold outlines and narrative symbolism. His approach to the creative process stems from the desire to create work that reflects the way he sees it in his mind’s eye. “The creative process is like moonlight; it waxes and wanes. I have learned to adapt to the changing luminosity of the creative process by understanding the nature of the muse and my relationship with it. I have a deep desire to create and when I have a moment to focus on a new piece I like to start with some simple mediation. Outside factors fall away and I can focus on an image in my mind. Sometimes it’s more of a feeling than an image. I focus on how I want a painting to feel, which often involves a reoccurring theme of dismantling and rebuilding.”, Walker says. His latest body of work is stirred by curiosity- about the stories we inherit and in turn, reinterpret through our own lens.

Together, Launder, Lovett and Walker remind us that the West is not a fixed idea. It is still being written, questioned, and reimagined by the artists rising within it.
