HOLLYWOOD ENDING
Most of this show follows a theme of combining studies of historical paintings with movie scenes and autobiographical memories. I find often that referencing movies is the best way to interpret how I am feeling and then express those feelings to a general audience. As a culture, we are deeply invested in movies and TV. I’ve been using symbols and characters from movies to play the part of me or a contemporary person in Jackson.
The Stand is an interpretation of an Albert Bierstadt painting which exists at the intersection of several plotlines. It’s a Bierdstadt-esque landscape with a river running through a mountainous scene. However, in the foreground, I’ve replaced the American Indian wielding a spear over a buffalo with a vintage Winnebago RV—a representation of tourism or contemporary culture—surrounded by bison. The herd feels confrontational, facing off with the RV.
History is a long link of ideas, especially art history. A lot of people have forgotten these paintings I am referencing. I think it’s important for contemporary artists and art historians to shed light on these artists and to build on their ideas.
