Born in 1978 of the Taa’chii’nii and A’shii’hi’ lineages, Sheldon Harvey is a celebrated Navajo artist whose work bridges ancestral tradition and contemporary expression. Originally from Lukachukai, Arizona, on the Navajo Nation, Harvey was introduced to art at a young age by his uncle Aaron Harvey and his grandfathers, revered medicine men, whose teachings laid the foundation for his lifelong artistic journey.
Harvey’s mixed-media sculptures and paintings draw deeply from Navajo creation stories—particularly the Air-Spirit Beings of the First World—while integrating influences from Cubism and Expressionism. Working with a rich palette of materials including wood, fabric, feathers, stains, and paint, his pieces embody both the spiritual essence of Diné folklore and a contemporary, abstract sensibility.
In addition to his studio practice, Harvey shares his passion and expertise as a professor of art at Diné College in Tsaile, Arizona, mentoring the next generation of Native artists. His work has earned critical acclaim, including Best in Show and multiple first-place awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market, and is held in prominent collections throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Sheldon Harvey continues to expand the dialogue between cultural heritage and modern art, creating work that resonates with both collectors and communities worldwide.
