Utah-native Jared Sanders finds his art on the road. Long stretches of pavement stitch together rural outposts in the American West, along which are tight shoulders where the artist parks to take in subtly sublime scenes of farmland, rivers and forests. While traveling, he lets the landscape wash over his consciousness, registering line, shape and color from the constant stream of visual stimuli available on the road. Back in the studio, the essential elements percolate and resolve themselves into compositions that read simultaneously as transcendent and specific: barns made iconic by the vastness that surrounds them; a limitless desert sky grounded in sage. He sets his horizons low, allowing for peace to pervade, albeit in quiet tension with the subsumed ground. Through his meditative practice, the paved promise of Western roadways reads as calm conduits for communion with place.
Striving not for photorealism, Sanders instead reduces the noise of his travels into serene abstractions. Disparate photos are distilled into explorations of color and form —a cliff band as contrasting contours, a roof tiled by palette knife. Less narrative and more evocative, his hand visible at every turn. Painterly and patient.
Titles gesture at locations, but never point. Sanders considers himself a regionalist, roving between the farmlands of Utah, the alpine pastures of Montana, and the weathered architecture of Colorado. His scenes are self-determined, painted with no destination in mind. “I choose subjects other people might overlook,” he says. “And when I put it into the square of the canvas, it becomes something else. It takes on a life of its own.” Each canvas is created according to its own will and wayfinding, unbound by geographic or artistic expectation. As long as they arrive somewhere interesting—a composition charged with visual discovery—Sanders feels content.
For his summer exhibition at Altamira, Sanders brings a spectrum of moments from his regional travels. The exhibition runs from July 9th to 20th.
