NATURAL DESIGN
Many elements in this painting also appear throughout the show. I’m trying to change up the way that I see landscape. I’m trying to shift my perspective, to simplify the content and strengthen the design. Natural Design encapsulates that effort, having removed everything except the subject of the painting—the part of the landscape that I have focused on as the most important. The background fades away, but at the same time, I’ve made that element disappear into the design. Not just a painting of a barn or a part of the landscape. Those literal elements—the barn, the land—fade into the design.
The title piece, Natural Design, goes together with two other pieces: Divine Design and Accidental Design. The titles are interchangeable between those three paintings. I’m looking for the accidental design that occurs naturally in the landscape. I’m bringing that out and accentuating it. As a landscape painter, I am trying to find the abstraction.
This particular piece uses reference material I’ve painted before. I’ve sat with it for a while, letting it mature in my head. That goes for just about every painting in the show. They have all been years and years in the making. This speaks to my natural evolution as an artist. I always tried to simplify and always have been design oriented. This show is taking the next step. All of my usual elements are there—the barn, the landscape, the cows—but I’m coming closer to what I would like those elements to say in each painting. More natural, more simplified, quieter, but also a little more random and a little less literal. It makes me feel like I’ve fallen short when I’ve created a piece that someone says looks just like a photograph. That’s not what I’m trying to do. Most artists have a tendency to find a subject and reference material and paint what’s there. I distill those things down and paint what’s important, which suits the type of person I am. I tend to use as few words as possible and paint as little as possible. To say as much as I can with as little as possible.
