Stone and Sky

The desert landscape is unique and inspiring in a way that no other landscape can be. I love that there is nothing covering or hiding what the land is actually made of- it’s all exposed. It may be harsh, but I find a lot of beauty and peace there.” – Jared Sanders

Stone and Sky is a meditation on the stark beauty of the desert, and a homage to the quiet drama it possesses. Jared Sanders has an uncanny ability to distill the vastness of the landscape into something both intimate and monumental. “The inspiration for this show comes from years of travel through southern Utah and northern Arizona. As I mined photography from those travels a very cohesive theme developed. I think the desert landscape can be distilled down to stone and sky.”, the artist says.

His new body of work highlights the wide horizons, subtle atmospheres and shifting temperatures of light that define our experience of the desert. By reducing the terrain to its purest relationships, Sanders reveals a deeper rhythm of the West, one rooted in stillness, clarity, and endurance.  “There is a drive to create that is ever present in my mind that I don’t think will ever be satisfied. In addition, I love the tactical feel of putting a loaded brush to canvas, which I never tire of.”, Sanders says.

Jared Sanders considers himself a regionalist and travels the winding roads of the West for his inspiration. Born in 1970 in Kaysville, Utah, he studied art with Glen Edwards at Utah State University. Sanders’ work has appeared in national publications including Western Art Collector, Southwest Art and Western Art and Architecture magazines. He has had over a dozen one-man shows in Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Scottsdale, Arizona; Park City, Utah; and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Sanders currently lives near the small town of Heber, Utah, and paints the enduring forms of farmlands, hills, rivers, and trees that he intimately knows and loves.
