The View from the Road
“One of the things I love most about the western landscape is the flat valleys ringed by mountains under a vast sky. The fact that you can go from deep greens and blues of a mountain valley to silver sage and red rocks in no time, is unique.” – Jared Sanders
Jared Sanders spends a good deal of time traveling the winding roads of the West, looking for elements in the landscape that catch his eye. “There’s a way of seeing that provides a never- ending supply of interesting scenes in the western landscape: the placement and shape of a barn or a group of trees; the interaction between layers of distant mountain ranges. It’s endless.”, the artist says. Sanders is known for his calming, sophisticated palette and compositions that hold a meditative quality and power in their quiet drama.
His latest body of work reads as a homage to the land and its natural awe, as well as its oft-forgotten structures, standing symbols of grit and rural identity. His barns, each with a personality of their own, are almost portrait-like in their reverence. “I like the way that they break up the landscape. They allow me to design around the barn in sections which creates a little bit of mystery where the landscape goes behind the barn and reappears on the other side.”, says Sanders. This mystery amplifies the feeling of a sacred space and leaves the door open to explore our own spiritual connection with the land.
Jared Sanders considers himself a regionalist and travels the West extensively for his inspiration. Born in 1970 in Kaysville, Utah, he studied art with Glen Edwards at Utah State University. Sanders’ work has appeared in national publications including Western Art Collector, Southwest Art and Western Art and Architecture magazines. He has had over a dozen one-man shows in Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Scottsdale, Arizona; Park City, Utah; and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Sanders currently lives near the small town of Heber, Utah, and paints the enduring forms of farmlands, hills, rivers, and trees that he intimately knows and loves.
