Breaking Forth

“My passion for the west is rooted in its variety. There are endless options that are all beautiful in their own way. I can enjoy stretching my eyes and painting a seemingly boundless sky or I can experience the interior of a forest that demands my entire attention by its proximity and wonderful detail.”   - Robert Moore

Robert Moore’s latest body of large-scale works impresses in its size and energy. The artist has a keen eye for finding dynamic shapes within the natural landscape and imbuing them with his signature rich texture and lively brushwork. The result is a vibrant celebration of nature’s beauty, and an abundance of harmonious color.

Moore is both colorblind and ambidextrous, which allows him to work in a completely unique way; using both hands at the same time to paint.  “My process in this studio is quite different because of the challenge of protanopia color blindness. I paint on a horizontal surface that can rotate 360° with a monitor and trackpad that allows me to turn the subject matter image upside down to work the various areas. I am simply painting shapes and relationships and not objects. I paint with both hands simultaneously and have an apprentice that stands on the opposite side of my palette who cleans my tools as I throw them down and pick up a fresh set.  The apprentice also keeps the mixed colors in the appropriate position on my pallet so that I know what the hue is. This allows me to stay in control of the order in my color scheme.”, the artist says.

With diligence and gratitude, Moore has become a leading impressionistic oil painter, represented across the country and lauded by Western art publications nationally. Moore earned a Bachelor of Science degree with teaching credentials in art from Eastern Oregon State College, before attending the ArtCenter College of Design in California, where he majored in illustration. True to his roots, Robert lives on a farm in Southern Idaho with his wife, Rebecca, and their six children. Immersed in the Snake River Basin, he is surrounded by the same scenery that first captivated him as a child, and his upbringing continues to drive his desire to share the beauty he sees in nature.
