In his latest body of work, Rocky Hawkins explores the archetype of the Mystic. These spiritual truth seekers, deeply connected with nature and the universe are compelling conduits for Hawkins expressive style. Rocky Hawkins weaves abstraction with a hint of realism resulting in a nonlinear and often unpredictable path. By embracing ambiguity, aspects of the paintings are withholding complete information, lending an air of mystery. Ultimately the artist leaves the interpretation open to the viewer’s imagination. “As a painter, I constantly challenge myself in technique, subject matter, and mediums. By embracing growth and taking risks, I embark on a journey of self-discovery. I don’t label myself as a specific type of painter, but my work consistently incorporates gestural figurative elements. Sometimes I have a clear idea in mind and pursue it directly. Other times, I begin a painting with a journey into the unknown.”, Hawkins says. At times, he utilizes automatism, drawing or painting subconsciously without a preconceived composition. “I channel my innate passion for abstraction with fragmented strokes and color, resulting in a glimpse of what might be. The outcome is an abstract expression of a particular idea or image that is felt and transcends reality”. says Hawkins.
As one of the leading painters in the American West, Rocky Hawkins artistic endeavors transcend conventional representations of the region. He demonstrates unwavering courage in taking risks and harbors a deep passion for the interplay between colors, textures, and shapes that ultimately culminates in the emergence of imagery within his paintings. Hawkins resides on a historic ranch in Southwest Montana. Surrounded by historic structures and artifacts from the 19th century, he and his wife have created a historically rich and creatively fertile environment that allows him to immerse himself in his own imagined past. Born and raised in the West, his profound connection to history is evident in his fascination with the land and architecture. His works are esteemed in numerous private and corporate collections, and he has garnered recognition in national publications such as Western Art Collector and Western Art & Architecture magazines.
