They Have Horses
“I'm an action painter and I paint with gestures. I rely on my intuition, and I fill the canvas with abstract shapes without over thinking and absent of any rules. I’m after the mysterious and I like to make the usual unusual by changing colors, shapes and perspectives.“ -Rocky Hawkins
In his latest body of work, Rocky Hawkins revisits one of his favorite subjects, the horse. With his signature style that transcends both contemporary and western genres, he presents a cohesive group of paintings that come alive with a freshness and vitality that embody the Year of the Horse- strength, high energy and a transformative quality. A common theme amongst the canvases is a vignette background which is a twist for the artist. “My paintings usually fill the whole canvas but, in this series, I have painted the subject isolated from the background. It’s an exciting new perspective. This process has given rise to deeper knowledge and understanding of this incredible animal that is able to become one with a human being while allowing me to explore atypical compositions.”, Hawkins says.
Rocky Hawkins lives and works on a historic ranch in Southwest Montana. The artist and his wife have surrounded themselves with old buildings and artifacts from the 1800’s creating a historically rich and creatively inspiring environment that allows him to live in his own invented world from the past. “I was born and raised in the West and the history seems to be in my blood. I am interested in the land, the architecture; how fast interesting towns arose. The lifestyle was like nothing I can compare. It excites me.”, the artist says.
As one of the premier painters in the American West, Rocky’s work reaches beyond typical representations of the region. Unafraid to take risks, he is passionate about the relationships of the colors, textures and shapes where imagery eventually emerges. His paintings are included in numerous private and cooperate collections and he has been featured in national publications including Western Art Collector and Western Art & Architecture magazines.
