The Gravity of Hózhó
“While my Navajo heritage shapes my entire artistic voice, I strive to honor it by pushing its boundaries. By blending traditional spiritual concepts with modern, expressionistic styles, I show that our culture is alive, relevant, and constantly evolving rather than static."- Sheldon Harvey
Deeply rooted in Navajo traditions and inspired by creation myths and ancient stories, Harvey's art seamlessly blends traditional storytelling with contemporary creativity. The Gravity of Hózhó, speaks to the undeniable pull and weight of the Navajo philosophy of balance, beauty, and harmony. “Hózhó isn't just a passive concept; it is a powerful, grounding force of our roots. This show explores how that ancient spiritual gravity pulls traditional stories and modern expression together, holding them in balance.”, Harvey says.
Harvey’s mixed media works blend elements of cubism and expressionism, layered with a diverse palette of unique materials including wood, fabric, feathers, stains, charcoal and paint. “I keep my process intuitive and try not to overthink. If I get stuck in my head, I just start putting pigment mediums to paper or canvas. By letting the paint and charcoal guide me, I allow the figures and the design to naturally take their own course.”, says the artist. “My favorite part is tapping into that creative rhythm where I completely lose track of time. When a painting develops its own energy and begins to speak back to me, reaching that point is incredibly rewarding and brings a deep sense of peace and purpose.”
Born in 1978 of the Taa'chii'nii and A'shii hi' lineages, Sheldon Harvey carries forward a rich artistic heritage. Originally from Lukachukai, Arizona, on the Navajo Nation, Harvey's journey began under the guidance of his uncle, Aaron Harvey, and his grandfathers, Edward and Leo Harvey, revered medicine men. Beyond his artistic practice, Harvey serves as an Art professor at Diné College in Tsaile, Arizona, where he imparts his knowledge and passion for art to the next generation.
