Attuning
“I think wildlife creatures have something to teach us about where we place our attention. We live in an increasingly noisy world, and so much of our attention is pulled outward. We have lost some of our human animal instinct in the unrelenting press of modernity. Attuning is an invitation to turn away from the cluttered mind and back toward the subtleties of the body, toward what we sense before we even have words for it.” - Stephanie Revennaugh
With her latest works, Stephanie Revennaugh is slowing down and deepening her awareness. “I'm coming to understand that the larger exploration underneath my work is the mirror between consciousness and form. How does an internal state reveal itself through the physical body? How much can we perceive simply by paying close attention?”, she asks. “Attuning is about attention. It refers to listening to both the subtle and the loud inputs around us and noticing how the nervous system responds. It is also the title of my newest sculpture, a mule deer skull with a halo. The skull is a common sight in the West. The halo points to something less tangible, the almost etheric quality of an animal exquisitely attuned to its surroundings.”, Revennaugh says.
Revennaugh’s sculpture is born from an intimate acquaintance with horses and other wildlife. They are fluent expressions of movement, memory and the deep emotional intelligence of animals. “My creative process usually begins with intuition and curiosity. Sometimes a gesture strikes me, and I want to follow it. Other times I become interested in a state of being, and I begin looking for the gesture that can express it. Looking back over my body of work, I can see something I couldn't necessarily see while I was making it. The sculptures themselves have been guiding me toward greater consciousness and self-awareness.”, Revennaugh says.
Revennaugh is largely self-taught through intensive workshops with notable artists in the US and France. Her early years in Ohio, Central, and South America gave her a taste for adventure and exploration. Drawing on experiences around the world, Stephanie continues to evolve, creating ever more evocative work and exploring new materials and concepts. Revennaugh’s work was the subject of the feature article, “A New Era of Bronze” in Big Sky Journal magazine. Awards include the Marilyn Newmark Memorial Grant for a meritorious body of work in animal sculpture by the National Sculpture Society, Best New Artist, Purchase Award and 1st Place in 3-D at the Cowgirl Up! Show at The Sigler Western Museum. She divides her time between Montana and California.
